Most business and education experts agree that effective written communication skills are essential for workers in the 21st century. Yet, schools are focusing less on formal writing instructon in part, due to the impact of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legalization. Passed in 2001, NCLB mandates, among other things that schools show adequate yearly progress(AYP) on their state's standardized tests. Punitive measures are taken towards schools who do not meet AYP goals. As a result, in many schools, the influence of NCLB has crerated a test preparation environment that focuses on only tested content areas (math and language arts), and in many cases, discourage formal written instruction. Further research of NCLB and the current K-12 academic landscape has also discovered the following:

Increased classroom instruction for English language developement and math

Schools spend 46% more time on English language developement and 37% more time on math. This increased time in the tested areas means there is less time to focus on formal writng instruction.
